My Record Store Day extravaganza…
Record Store Day (RSD) is that one day a year where small indie shops get the attention they deserve. Some will say in it’s 4th year, that RSD has become nothing but fodder for eBay scalpers and only hurts collectors and stores. The first two may be true, but I bet stores couldn’t be happier, especially after the crowds I saw on Saturday.
Anyway, here’s my RSD rundown…
6am - Wake up, question why I’m doing this…6:40am - Hit up McDonald’s for some much needed coffee
6:45am - Arrive at Galaxy CDs in Hamilton
7:00am - Jared arrives, we discuss nerd things
7:45am - Jaysen arrives, more nerd things discussed (we are the first 3 there)
8:50am - Doors open, adrenaline flows and I’m no longer questioning why I’m doing this. First run through I pick up Foo Fighters - Medium Rare, Nirvana - Hormoaning, Glassjaw - Worship & Tribute & Mastodon - Live at the Aragon. I then realize I really do want the Yeasayer - End Blood 7” and force my way back through for that.
8:58am - Goodbyes are said and I get back in my car and ponder whether I really do want to continue on to Shake It Records in Cincinnati. I do.
9:35am - I get up to Shake It and see the line around the building. Didn’t realize how cold/rainy it was while I was driving. Now I’m standing in it. Woman behind me starts telling anyone who will listen about how she’s doing this for her son who is in college. She’s from Hamilton and starts trashing Galaxy CDs saying they never get any RSD stuff, and if they do, the owner eBays all of it. I tell the people she’s talking to that I just came from there and what she said isn’t true (along with super roll eyes). Then I start talking to the guy in front of me about what we’re looking for, nice guy.
-:—am - Not really sure how long I was standing outside waiting to get into Shake It. Probably a half hour to 45 minutes. I get inside and it’s pandemonium. You can barely move, but everyone is at least respectful. The first two things I look for are already gone. The guy in front of me (that I spoke to earlier) taps my shoulder and hands me a Daft Punk - Tron 10” that I had told him I was looking for before. Like I said, nice guy. I also grabbed the Circa Survive - Appendage EP, and Matt & Kim - Block after Block 7”. While I was here I went ahead and looked downstairs at the rest of the vinyl. I found the same sealed copy of Prince’s Around the World in a Day that had stared me in the face for months now and decided to buy it.
Around 11:30am - I decided to head over to Everybody’s Records since I was already driving everywhere. This had to be the most disappointing spot ever. Random boxes thrown on top of and under racks, no organization and it seemed like they had only about 15 different titles, but 40 of each.
11:40am - I’m hungry, and since I parked in Burger King’s parking lot I decide to grab a Steakhouse burger. It did the trick.
12:15pm - I arrived at Florence Mall in Florence, KY to pick up a copy of Coheed & Cambria’s Second Stage Turbine Blade on vinyl from Hot Topic because the Kenwood store didn’t get my order in.
1:20pm - Get home, exhausted. But I start to pilfer through everything I picked up and play them. Suddenly any negative feelings I had about going all out this RSD dissolve and I just enjoy the cool music that I bought. Can’t wait to do it all again next year.
Aaaand 6:00pm - A webstore lists some RSD exclusives on their site and I’m able to snag a Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American 3xlp set from there. Meaning I got every single release I was looking for except for one. Not too shabby. -
of Montreal - Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast Me and the little lady share musical tastes.

Different take on a great song.

Matthew Friedberger : Napoleonette
This is the first of 7 albums due out by Friedberger in 2011. For those who don’t know, he’s half of the Fiery Furnaces. This album focuses on the piano. It’s less “out there” than Furnaces.stuff, but fans will still feel right at home with it.
The next album “Meet me in Mirimas” is due on 3/15 and focuses on the guitar.
